New York series (2002-2006). This series explores the sometimes humorous and ironic
relationship between the skewed world of advertising imagery and the grittier and far less
perfect world in which we all live our day-to-day lives. These images can be thought of as
a subspecies of the genre of “street photography,” with its emphasis on the discovery of
hidden meaning in the often serendipitous and accidental conjunction of people and objects
which one encounters. The series was shot primarily, though not exclusively, in New York City.
It is important (to me at least) that people realize that these are “straight” photographs.
Although the images in this series were captured and printed digitally, they are NOT
manipulated, composited, or “photoshopped” in any way; nothing you see in any photograph
was added or changed after the image was exposed in the camera. What you see, in every
instance, is exactly what I saw through the viewfinder at the time of exposure.
