I began my artistic life as a street photographer. I delighted (and still delight) in the
serendipitous congruencies and happy accidents which result when images are plucked
directly out of the dynamic ebb and flow of life. Such photographs, when successful,
are made in that sliver of elusive space between ‘now’ and ‘then,’ in that transitory present
that Henri Cartier-Bresson called “the decisive moment.”
In the 1970s and 80s my work became more contemplative and formal as I began to deal
with more static subjects such as architecture, landscape and the nude. I put away my 35mm
cameras in favor of the more disciplined approach of the tripod-mounted large format camera.
Although I produced a large body of work during those years and published one book,
I have recently begun several new series of work which take me back to my roots on the street.
